Electromagnetic field angular momentum in condensed matter systems

چکیده

Various electromagnetic systems can carry an angular momentum in their E and B fields. The electromagnetic field angular momentum (EMAM) of these systems can combine with the spin angular momentum to give composite fermions or composite bosons. In this paper we examine the possiblity that an EMAM could provide an explanation of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) which is complimentary to the Chern-Simons explanation. We also examine a toy model of a non-BCS superconductor (e.g. high Tc superconductors) in terms of an EMAM. The models presented give a common, simple picture of these two systems in terms of an EMAM. The presence of an EMAM in these systems might be tested through the observation of the decay modes of a charged, spin zero unstable particle inside one of these systems. Mechanical generation of spin current

Spin current, a flow of spins, is a key concept in the field of spintronics. It is generated by using angular momentum conversion among magnetic angular momentum due to magnetization dynamics, photon angular momentum, angular momentum due to orbital motion of electron, and spin angular momentum [1–3]. Meanwhile, mechanical angular momentum carried by condensed matter systems due to macroscopic ...

Monopole in Momentum Space in Noncommutative Quantum Mechanics

We generalize the noncommutative quantum mechanics by promoting the θ parameter to an operator which is shown to be only momentum dependent. We introduce an angular momentum satisfying the usual algebra only if the θ field has a Dirac monopole structure in momentum space. This result can be related to recent experiments in condensed matter physics. In this work, we generalize the quantum mechan...

A general realistic treatment of the disk paradox

Mechanical angular momentum is not conserved in systems involving electromagnetic fields with non-zero electromagnetic field angular momentum. Conservation is restored only if the total (mechanical and field) angular momentum is considered. Previous studies have investigated this effect, known as “Feynman’s Electromagnetic Paradox” or simply “Disk Paradox” in the context of idealized systems (i...

Construction of Conserved Current Operators

A general procedure for constructing conserved electromagnetic current operators, for both finite and infinite degree of freedom systems, is given. A four-momentum operator consisting of matter, photon, and electromagnetic interactions is assumed to be polynomial in photon creation and annihilation operators. Commutators of the four-momentum operator with the four-vector potential operator at t...

Photon orbital angular momentum: problems and perspectives

Electromagnetic fields can carry, besides energy, linear and angular momentum. The exchange of linear momentum with matter produces forces due to radiation pressure. That comet tails point away from the Sun because light carries linear momentum was first suggested by Kepler. A complete account of radiation pressure was developed by Poynting in 1905 in terms of electromagnetic linear momentum de...
